The history of Mount Pleasant dates back to the early 1700’s when a plantation owned by Jacob Motte gave the area its name. Motte’s Hibben House, situated in Old Village, is the oldest home in Mount Pleasant. In fact, it’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area.

Before the English arrived, the SeeWee Indians inhabited the area, and it was these natives who were responsible for the name “Mount Pleasant.” The first Europeans to settle in the area were led by Captain O’Sullivan who was given 2,340 acres of land. This area was later known as the Ferry Tract, and it encompassed Sullivan’s Island and the neck of land that stretches from Shem Creek to Cove Inlet.

When the first white settlers arrived in the area, they built homes and started a farming community. It wasn’t long before they began transforming this land into a rich farming and shipbuilding community.

With a variety of outdoor activities for everyone, Mount Pleasant is the perfect place for a family getaway or a day out with friends! From fishing and crabbing to boat watching, Splash Island, and gorgeous walking paths, there’s something for everyone.

Families can also enjoy a day at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum where they can explore a real military aircraft carrier, sit in a bomber aircraft, or walk around the USS Yorktown, a huge naval ship from World War II. This museum is a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in the area’s nautical history.

There are also many opportunities for shopping, dining and nightlife in Mount Pleasant. From upscale restaurants to casual eateries, Mount Pleasant has something for everyone.
